About the Project

Barcelona.cafe is a small personal project that began with the goal of finding out which specialty coffee shops were open whenever I felt like having a cup of coffee. Most of these cafes don’t follow “standard” hours—some open at 8:00 a.m., others at 8:30 a.m., and others at 9:00 a.m. Some are closed on Mondays, others are open every Sunday, and you’ll also find some that close in the middle of the afternoon or at noon.

That’s why I put together an Excel list of the coffee shops I frequented and assigned them a simple color-coding system—green if open, red if closed—based on their hours, so I could check the list whenever I felt like going for a coffee. A few months later, seeing that this little tool was useful to me, I thought it might be useful to others, so I decided to create barcelona.cafe, a mini-directory of selected specialty coffee shops in the city of Barcelona.

The Selection of Coffee Shops

Barcelona.cafe does not aim to list every coffee shop that calls itself “specialty,” since there are coffee shop chains that use that title while serving coffee of dubious quality... Barcelona.cafe lists coffee shops that serve high-quality coffee, prepare it well, and offer a pleasant atmosphere and service. It’s about finding that balance.
